Applying for a Passport: 101

You just booked your dream vacation, but realized you need a passport...now what?

You've been waiting for that abroad experience for what it seems to feel like years. Finally, you book that dream vacation, but realize –oh, no! I need a passport. So now what?

As a travel agency, we hear this all the time. That's why we decided to lay down these easy steps for you to follow before leaving the country.

1. Start Early

The passport process can be a timely one, so be sure to look into applying several months before your trip. If you are a first-time applicant or minor, you need to go to the Post Office to apply for a passport. If you are renewing your passport, you may be eligible to submit your paperwork by mail.

2. Gather Your Documents

When you arrive at your local Post Office, you must fill out Form DS-11. Don't forget to bring proof of residency, like a copy of your birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, etc. You will also need to have a valid ID present, as well.

3. Identify Special Circumstances

Should you have a special circumstance, such as a child under 16, your previous passport was lost or stolen, or owe child support, be ready to provide that information upon arrival. For a full list of special circumstances, view some examples here.

4. Have Your Photo Ready

You must provide at least one photo of yourself to submit your passport application. Some passport facilities offer photo services for an additional fee. View those locations here.

5. Determine Passport Fees

A list of passport fees can be found on the U.S. Department of State's website. Keep in mind, the application fee and acceptance fees are processed separately.

And voila! Your passport application has been submitted. Typically, your passport will be processed within 4-6 weeks, so make sure you apply well in advance!
